The Great Bell
Long ago, there lived an old man who specialized in casting bells. He went wherever a bell was to be cast. He had a beautiful, clever daughter who followed him wherever he went. When she was eighteen, the girl was engaged to a young man from a founder's family in Tongzhou near Beijing (famours for Great wall, the magic project in the world), and they were going to get married the next year.
That year the Emperor wanted to build a huge bell tower in Beijing. The old man was recruited to be the head of the builders, and his daughter's wedding was held up.
At that time a drum tower had already been built in Beijing to tell the time, but there had to be a bell tower to match it, so the Emperor ordered the bell tower built and a huge bell weighing over 10,000 jin cast. Founders from all over the country were summoned, including the young man from Tongzhou. To cast it, a foundry was set up to the west of the Drum Tower, where several hundred people worked hard day and night.
However, no matter how hard they worked, they could not cast the big bell. This desperately worried the old man, who moaned and groaned every day. Noticing this, his daughter was deeply worried too.
Soon time was up. The old man went to the factory very early that day. Unable to remain idle at home, his daughter followed him hastily to the factory. When she got there, she saw the fire licking the sky and all the craftsmen drenched in sweat, bustling about, while her father was organizing the last casting. Crucibles of molten bronze were being poured into the hill-like mould, but the metal did not solidify. All the builders were desperately worried, not knowing what to do.
Just then the girl suddenly remembered the saying that "Molten bronze can only solidify when it meets human blood." So she decided to sacrifice herself in order to save her father and his mates, because the Emperor would have them killed if they failed to cast the bell. She ran up to them and cried loudly: "Here I am, dad!" And with that she jumped into the furnace. The molten bronze splashed in all directions amidst blue light. All the craftsmen were dumbfounded.
The old man ran up to save her, but it was too late. He only found an embroidered shoe beside the furnace.
The great bell was thus cast. Its sound was particularly clear and melodious and could be heard clearly from many miles away. When it was tolled, it was given eighteen quick strokes, eighteen slow strokes and eighteen quick-and-slow strokes, and people called the girl the Bell-casting Lady. This is the huge bell housed in the Temple of Awakening, known as the King of Chinese Bells.
